A little care. A happy heal.
A LITTLE TLC
FOR YOUR NEW INK
Follow the instructions given at your appointment. Healing time varies; your tattoo may look healed before the skin underneath has fully recovered.
YOUR BANDAGE
- Remove your bandage at the time your artist specifies.
- For adhesive film, gently remove it under warm running water. Pull slowly back over itself, rather than lifting away from your skin.
- If the film leaks, lets water underneath, or causes irritation, remove it and contact your artist.
- Don’t rewrap or apply another bandage unless instructed.
KEEP IT CLEAN
- Wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
- After removing your bandage, gently wash with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water.
- Use clean fingertips—no scrubbing, washcloths, or loofahs.
- Rinse thoroughly. Air-dry or gently pat dry with a clean paper towel.
- Repeat twice daily, and after getting the area dirty. Avoid excessive washing.
MOISTURIZE LIGHTLY
- Once your tattoo is uncovered and dry, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion as needed.
- Your skin should feel comfortable, not greasy or shiny.
- Use products recommended by your artist. Avoid antibiotic ointments unless a healthcare professional directs you to use them.
WHILE IT HEALS
- Take showers rather than baths. Avoid soaking, swimming, hot tubs, and saunas until healed—even with a waterproof bandage.
- Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight. Protect it with clean, loose clothing.
- Save sunscreen for fully healed skin; then use SPF 30 or higher.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing and avoid friction.
- Let peeling skin and scabs fall away naturally. Don’t pick, scratch, or slap your tattoo.
- Keep towels, bedding, and clothing clean.
WHAT’S NORMAL
Some early soreness, mild redness, clear fluid, itching, and flaking can be normal. These should gradually improve.
WHEN TO GET HELP
Get medical advice promptly for spreading redness, worsening pain or swelling, pus, fever, or chills.
Don’t wait for an artist’s reply if you suspect an infection.
